The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has clarified that Nigerians in the United Kingdom participating in the ongoing special passport intervention exercise are not required to pay any additional fees beyond the officially approved passport charges.
The clarification followed concerns and reports of inconvenience experienced by Nigerians in the UK over the application and processing of their international passports under the special intervention exercise.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Alao Babatunde, Tunji-Ojo explained that the intervention was introduced to provide Nigerians in the United Kingdom with additional options for processing their passport applications.
He stressed that the exercise does not attract any extra charges apart from the official fees of $150 for a five-year validity passport and $230 for a 10-year validity passport, excluding applicable bank charges.
According to the Minister, neither the Ministry of Interior nor the Nigeria Immigration Service has introduced any charges outside the officially approved fees.
Tunji-Ojo said consultations were ongoing with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to address the challenges and inconveniences associated with the process and ensure they do not persist.
The Minister added that the Federal Government remained committed to providing relief and improved services to Nigerians at home and abroad.
He also advised passport applicants to take advantage of the seamless contactless biometric passport application system.
