NISCN Urges Churches, Mosques to Establish Safety Units Amid Clerics’ Sudden Deaths

The National Industrial Safety Council of Nigeria (NISCN) has urged churches, mosques and other religious institutions across the country to establish functional Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) units to prevent avoidable deaths and improve emergency response during worship services.

The council also called on religious organisations to train designated workers as emergency first responders capable of administering first aid and basic life support to individuals who experience sudden medical emergencies.

The National President of NISCN, Engr. John Obajinmi, made the call amid concerns over reported incidents of clerics, including pastors, imams and gospel ministers, collapsing and dying during or outside religious activities.

According to the council, the availability of trained first responders and prompt medical intervention could help save lives in emergencies involving religious leaders and members of congregations.

NISCN stressed the importance of administering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) promptly when indicated, noting that immediate first aid and appropriate emergency care can improve the chances of survival in cases of cardiac arrest.

To strengthen safety in places of worship, the council recommended the establishment of dedicated HSE units to identify potential hazards, assess safety risks and promote a safe environment for worshippers.

It also urged religious organisations to train ushers, protocol officers, church workers and mosque committees in first aid, CPR and basic life support. Where feasible, worship centres were encouraged to provide Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and functional first-aid kits.

The council further advised religious leaders to prioritise regular medical check-ups, adequate rest and stress management, emphasising the importance of maintaining good health while carrying out demanding religious responsibilities.

NISCN reaffirmed its readiness to support religious institutions through specialised safety training, risk assessments and professional guidance on establishing HSE structures suited to places of worship.
