The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed Commissioners of Police across the country to intensify community policing efforts through regular town hall engagements and improved accessibility to members of the public within their respective commands.
The directive was issued during an emergency conference with Commissioners of Police and members of the press held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking at the meeting, the IGP stressed that effective policing cannot succeed without the trust, cooperation and active participation of citizens, noting that security remains a collective responsibility that requires strong collaboration between the Police and the communities.
As part of the new initiative, Commissioners of Police have been instructed to hold regular interactive sessions with critical stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth organisations, market associations, transport unions, women groups and other community-based institutions.
The police boss also directed all Commissioners of Police to make their contact details available to recognised community leaders within their states to strengthen communication, improve responsiveness and boost public confidence in policing operations.
According to him, community-driven intelligence remains crucial in combating crime and addressing emerging security threats, stressing that stronger police-community relationships would enhance public safety and operational effectiveness nationwide.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to a people-centred and accountable policing system anchored on partnership, transparency and mutual trust.
The statement was signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, on Thursday in Abuja.
