The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.
This declaration follows the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and is part of the seven-day national mourning period announced in the wake of Buhari’s death. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Monday.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo described the holiday as a symbolic gesture to pay tribute to the former president’s lifelong dedication to Nigeria’s unity, democratic growth, and national development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the minister said.
He urged citizens to use the day to promote peace, patriotism, and national unity—principles that Buhari championed throughout his tenure.
As previously directed by the Presidency, national flags are to continue flying at half-mast throughout the mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13.
The Federal Government extended its condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large, expressing hope that the nation would remain united in honouring the legacy of the late statesman.
The former president died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in London. He was 82.
