The Nigerian entertainment industry and academic community have been thrown into mourning following the death of renowned veteran actor, dramatist, filmmaker, and theatre scholar, Dr. Kola Oyewo, who passed away at the age of 80.

His son, Oyewo Adetoyese, announced his demise in an emotional statement on Friday, describing his father as a man whose love, wisdom, strength, and kindness touched countless lives.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of my beloved father, Adekola Akangbe Gabriel Oyewo. He was a wonderful man whose love, wisdom, strength, and kindness touched the lives of many,” he said.

Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Dr. Oyewo was one of Nigeria’s most celebrated theatre practitioners, with a distinguished career spanning over six decades.

He began his acting journey in 1964 with the legendary Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group and rose to prominence through his exceptional performances on stage and screen. He became widely acclaimed for his portrayal of Odewale in the classic African tragedy, The Gods Are Not to Blame, written by renowned playwright Ola Rotimi.

Throughout his illustrious career, Oyewo featured in several iconic productions, including Saworoide, Sango, Koseegbe, and the popular television series Super Story, earning admiration from audiences across generations.
