President Bola Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, granting pay increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent in a move aimed at boosting troop welfare and strengthening national security.
The new salary package, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit about 250,000 military personnel across various ranks.
Under the approved structure, officers above the rank of Colonel—including Brigadier Generals, Major Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals—will receive a 30 per cent salary increase. Officers from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while personnel from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive an 80 per cent salary increase.
The revised pay package raises the annual salary bill for the Armed Forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, underscoring the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel.
President Tinubu said the decision reflects his administration’s appreciation for the courage and sacrifices of members of the Armed Forces in combating banditry, kidnapping, terrorism and other security threats across the country.
“The men and women who help keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising troop welfare while modernising the Armed Forces through the provision of advanced weapons and technological equipment needed for effective operations.
According to the President, no nation can attain
greatness without security, stressing that the government remains committed to deploying all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and safeguard the lives and property of Nigerians.
President Tinubu urged military personnel to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the nation’s gratitude for their service, expressing confidence that, together, Nigeria would overcome those seeking to undermine its peace and stability.
