The Nigeria Police Force has commenced disciplinary proceedings against a police officer captured in a viral video circulating on social media in Ekiti State.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Force said the officer, who appeared in camouflage uniform and displayed conduct considered inconsistent with the standards and ethics of the Force, has been identified and taken into custody.
According to the statement, the officer is a Sergeant attached to the Ikole-Ekiti Divisional Police Headquarters under the Ekiti State Police Command.
The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, has ordered a comprehensive psychological and medical evaluation of the officer as part of the disciplinary process.
The police explained that the assessment is mandatory to ensure that both the misconduct and any possible underlying health concerns are properly addressed.
Reacting to the incident, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, condemned the conduct displayed in the video, describing it as a gross violation of the discipline, professionalism and decorum expected from officers of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Force reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on substance abuse and any form of behaviour capable of undermining public confidence in the institution.
The statement was signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, on behalf of the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
