The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has extended its petrol discount programme at retail stations nationwide until October 31, 2026, insisting that the initiative is a temporary relief measure and does not amount to the reintroduction of fuel subsidy.

The company said the extension was aimed at cushioning the impact of rising petrol prices on Nigerians amid elevated global crude oil prices triggered by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. It added that the initiative was designed to ease the financial burden on households, businesses and other consumers.

In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, said the discount was initially introduced on October 1 to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary but had been extended in response to prevailing economic realities.

The company’s clarification followed a statement by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on October 8, 2026, regarding the government’s efforts to provide relief to Nigerians amid rising fuel prices.

NNPC explained that the discount applied specifically to its retail outlets nationwide and did not establish a uniform pump price across the country. It stressed that the initiative did not alter the market-based pricing framework governing petroleum products.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government and other stakeholders to ease the burden of rising fuel costs on Nigerians, while maintaining reliable product supply and commercially responsible operations. It also urged the public to disregard claims suggesting that the discount represented a restoration of fuel subsidy.

NNPC assured consumers that it would continue to communicate clearly about its products, prices and customer relief initiatives, adding that its priority remained providing practical support to Nigerians during the period of global market uncertainty.
