The Oyo State Government has explained the recent exfoliation incident at Iyamopo Hill in Igbeti, Olorunsogo Local Government Area, attributing it to natural geological processes. The government has also announced precautionary measures to ensure public safety.
In a statement issued by the Honourable Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the government assured residents that there is no cause for alarm, noting that no casualties have been recorded.
According to the Commissioner, the incident was caused by physical weathering of the rock formation—resulting from intense heat between February and May, followed by sudden cooling. “This expansion and contraction process causes cracking, peeling, and sheeting, which led to the minor tremors and rock movements witnessed over the weekend,” he explained.
To assess the situation, experts from the Oyo State Solid Mineral Development Agency (OYSMIDA), led by its Director General, Mr. Biodun Oni, have been dispatched to the site. Additionally, the government is working in collaboration with geologists from the University of Ibadan to further analyze the geological activity and propose long-term mitigation strategies.
As a precaution, residents living near the hill have been advised to temporarily evacuate until further assessments are completed and safety measures are in place.
Prince Oyelade reaffirmed the government’s commitment to public safety, stating, “We will continue to prioritize the well-being of our citizens and provide timely updates as investigations progress.”
