The Oyo State Government has extended by another 24 hours the curfew earlier imposed on 10 local government areas in Oke-Ogun as part of ongoing efforts to secure the release of abducted teachers and children in Oriire Local Government Area.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, announced the extension in a statement issued on Thursday.
Recall that Governor Seyi Makinde had on Tuesday imposed a 16-hour curfew on Oriire, Oorelope, Irepo, Saki West, Saki East, Atisbo, Itesiwaju, Iseyin, Olorunsogo and Atiba local government areas following the abduction incident in Oriire.
According to Oyelade, the additional 24-hour extension is aimed at consolidating the government’s security operations geared towards ending the captivity of the victims and preventing criminal elements from continuing their activities in the state.
“The extension is to consolidate government’s security efforts in putting an end to the captivity of our children and teachers in Oriire Local Government and discouraging the marauders from their dark enterprise of making money through captivity and human blood,” the statement said.
The commissioner noted that security agencies were intensifying efforts to ensure the safe rescue of the victims and restore normalcy to the affected areas.
Governor Makinde also appealed to residents of Oyo State to remain patient and continue to trust the government as security operatives work towards bringing the unfortunate incident to a decisive end.
He assured the people that the government remains committed to safeguarding lives and property and would continue to deploy all available resources to tackle insecurity across the state.
The curfew remains in force across the affected local government areas pending further directives from the state government.
