The Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Bayo Lawal, has assured residents that the state government is intensifying efforts to secure the release of victims abducted during the recent bandit attack in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
Lawal gave the assurance while speaking with journalists shortly after observing Eid-el-Kabir prayers on Wednesday.
The attack, which occurred about two weeks ago in the Ogbomoso axis of Oyo State, had sparked fear and concern among residents following reports that several locals were abducted by armed bandits.
Addressing the development, the Deputy Governor said the government was working tirelessly with security agencies to ensure the safe return of the victims, expressing optimism that positive results would soon be achieved.
According to him, “Recently, what has never happened in the South-West, indeed in Oyo State, happened about two Fridays ago, when bandits raided locals in Oriire Local Government. Oyo State is working assiduously and strenuously to ensure the release of the abductees.
“Very soon, our people will hear a story of happiness and joy because we are closing in on the bandits and the abductees will be released.”
Lawal appealed to residents to continue praying for peace and security across the state, stressing the need for collective support in tackling insecurity.
He added that the government remained committed to ensuring that such incidents do not become a recurring occurrence in Oyo State and the South-West region.
The Deputy Governor also used the occasion of Eid-el-Kabir to felicitate Muslims in Oyo State, Nigeria and across the world, urging them to embrace the virtues of obedience, sacrifice and charity symbolised by the festival.
“Today marks a significant calendar in our lives. The significance of Eid al-Adha is obedience to the commandment of Almighty Allah. It also teaches sacrifice and charity. We must continue to help one another and live peacefully,” he said.
Lawal further noted that Oyo State had remained largely peaceful and stable under the present administration, calling on residents across religious and ethnic lines to continue promoting peaceful coexistence.
“The moment calls for sacrifice, prayer and stability,” he added.
