Kwankwaso Slams Ali Modu Sheriff Over Comments on Peter Obi’s Northern Support
The vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has criticised former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, over his comments questioning the electoral strength of Peter Obi in Northern Nigeria.
Reacting to Sheriff’s recent interview on Channels Television, Kwankwaso expressed disappointment, saying he had expected the former governor’s long absence from public discourse to have improved his judgment.
He faulted Sheriff for claiming that Obi could not command significant support across the North, arguing that the former Labour Party presidential candidate had already demonstrated considerable acceptance in the region by polling about 2.8 million votes in his first presidential contest.
Kwankwaso maintained that the current political realities, including widespread dissatisfaction with the APC-led administration and the inclusion of a prominent Northern figure on the “OK” ticket, have further strengthened the alliance’s prospects ahead of the next general election.
He also dismissed Sheriff’s claim that Kano voters would reject Obi, insisting that the people of Kano have consistently shown political maturity and are neither bigoted nor xenophobic. According to him, supporters of the Kwankwasiyya movement would back any credible ticket presented under its platform.
The NDC vice-presidential candidate urged Sheriff to focus on addressing the pressing insecurity and humanitarian challenges confronting his home state rather than making what he described as divisive political statements.
Kwankwaso concluded by describing the “OK” ticket as Nigeria’s best opportunity to restore competent leadership, strengthen national unity, and put the country back on the path of progress.
