The 1984 set of Government Secondary School (GSS) Biu, Borno State, on Monday, celebrated their 40th anniversary reunion with a call to support their alma mater.
The event, themed “Role of Alumni in Societal Development and Unity,” brought together distinguished alumni, government officials, and other stakeholders.
In his welcome address, Major General Abdulmalik Bulama Biu (Rtd), Acting President of the 1984 Set, expressed gratitude to members for reconnecting after 40 years. He emphasized the importance of alumni contributing to the development of their alma mater, acknowledging that the government cannot bear all educational responsibilities.
“We are committed to strengthening the bonds of friendship and supporting each other while giving back to this great institution,” General Biu said. “Our initial efforts include the construction of six latrines with full water reticulation, and we promise further projects. We aim to contribute meaningfully to our alma mater, recognizing that government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of providing all the needs and its sustenance.”
The Deputy Governor of Borno State, Umar Usman Kadafur, commended the 1984 alumni for their dedication and commitment to fostering educational development in the school. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment towards improving education and urged other alumni groups to emulate the 1984 Set by supporting their alma matters and contributing to educational progress.
“I commend the 1984 set of GSS Biu for their efforts in giving back to their alma mater,” Deputy Governor Kadafur said. “This is a shining example of the impact that alumni can have on their schools and communities. We urge other alumni groups to follow this example and support their alma maters in any way they can.”
The Chairman of the Occasion, General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (Rtd), former Chief of Army Staff and Nigeria’s Ambassador to Benin Republic, praised the alumni for fostering unity and contributing to societal development. The Betara of Biu who was represented by Brigadier General Dadan Garba acknowledged their provision of essential facilities like toilets and learning materials to the school.
“I am impressed by the commitment and dedication of the 1984 set of GSS Biu,” General Buratai said. “Their efforts to support their alma mater are a testament to the values of unity, solidarity, and community service that we hold dear. I urge them to continue on this path and to inspire others to do the same.”
Highlights of the occasion included the commissioning of the latrine project built by the 1984 Set, presentation of awards to individuals who contributed to the school’s progress, paper presentations, and a symbolic cake-cutting ceremony.
General Biu also appealed for support from philanthropists and organizations to enhance their impact, expressing appreciation to the Borno State Government, North-East Development Commission, Hon. Muktar Aliyu Betara, and other contributors for their support in transforming the school.
“We are grateful for the support we have received so far, but we recognize that there is still much work to be done,” General Biu said. “We appeal to philanthropists, organizations, and individuals to join us in our efforts to support GSS Biu and provide quality education to the next generation of leaders.”
