The leadership crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party took a dramatic turn as its Board of Trustees (BoT) formally assumed control of the party following a Supreme Court judgment that nullified its National Working Committee (NWC).
Addressing the 84th BoT meeting in Abuja, the chairman, Adolphus Wabara, said the apex court ruling not only dissolved the Kabiru Turaki-led NWC but also exposed what he described as deep-rooted internal sabotage allegedly orchestrated to weaken the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Wabara said the BoT stepped in immediately to prevent a leadership vacuum, invoking constitutional provisions of the party after the court invalidated the 2025 national convention and upheld the suspension of key officials linked to a controversial parallel convention.
In a strongly worded address, the former Senate President accused unnamed party actors of colluding with external forces, including elements within the All Progressives Congress, to derail PDP’s internal processes.
He traced the crisis to events leading up to the botched November 2025 convention, alleging that a covert court case was instituted without the knowledge of the party’s leadership, ultimately resulting in a judgment that disrupted its plans.
“The judgment has vindicated our position that certain actions taken during the crisis were unconstitutional,” Wabara said, noting that decisions made by suspended officials, including the appointment of an acting national chairman, have now been rendered null and void.
Despite the turmoil, he maintained that the PDP remains resilient, declaring that the party “will never surrender to renegades and political brigands.”
Wabara also revealed that the party has secured the backing of two-thirds of its National Executive Committee (NEC) members to convene an emergency meeting on May 4, adding that the Independent National Electoral Commission has been notified.
He called on party leaders to use the moment to rebuild unity and reposition the PDP for what he described as a decisive battle to reclaim power in 2027.
The development signals a fresh phase in the PDP’s internal crisis, with the BoT now at the centre of efforts to stabilise the opposition party and chart a path forward.
