As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marks two years in office, former President Muhammadu Buhari has offered a message of both congratulations and caution, urging his successor to stay focused on governance and not allow vital reforms to be derailed by political distractions.
In a statement issued by his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, on Tuesday, May 28, 2025, Buhari praised Tinubu’s leadership under the All Progressives Congress (APC) but warned that the path to reform is long and must not be hindered by “nettlesome domestic politics.”
“Reforms will achieve success gradually, not overnight,” Buhari said.
“Necessary reforms and desired changes must not fall victim to nettlesome domestic politics.”
His remarks come amid growing political debates and resistance in some quarters to the Tinubu administration’s ongoing economic and structural reforms, which aim to reduce inflation and alleviate poverty.
Buhari acknowledged the administration’s efforts in tackling economic hardship, stating that poverty and inflation have hit the poorest Nigerians the hardest. However, he emphasized that governance is not the government’s task alone.
“The private sector and all of us as citizens must join in all ways we can,” he noted.
While expressing optimism about the nation’s future, Buhari urged Nigerians to manage their expectations and continue to support the government’s long-term vision.
“Our expectations from our governments should not get heavy,” he said.
“I am wishing President Tinubu heartfelt congratulations on his two years in office. May you keep leading with wisdom and care.”
