A tragic incident unfolded on what has been dubbed “Black Monday” in Oron, Akwa Ibom State, as a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Victor Okoh, allegedly murdered his wife, Victoria Okoh, over suspicions of infidelity.
The 42-year-old suspect was arrested by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command after neighbors raised an alarm over the horrific scene. Police officers who arrived at their residence around 5:20 am found the mutilated body of 38-year-old Victoria Okoh lying in front of their home.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect attacked his wife with a machete in what has been widely condemned as a barbaric act. In a desperate attempt to evade capture, Okoh was found hiding in the ceiling of his house but was swiftly apprehended by the police.
Authorities confirmed that the weapon used in the crime has been recovered, while the victim’s body has been deposited at the General Hospital Morgue for an autopsy. Investigations are ongoing.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, strongly condemned the act, vowing that justice would be served. He also warned against domestic violence, urging residents to resolve disputes through peaceful means rather than resorting to violence.
Oron Local Government Chairman Condemns the Killing
In response to the gruesome incident, the Executive Chairman of Oron Local Government Area, Hon. Chief Okon Asukwo Enweme, visited the crime scene at Effiong Essang Street, Oron, alongside security personnel and government officials. He described the act as inhuman and alien to cultural values, calling it “wickedness in high places.”
The council chairman urged the victim’s family and community members to refrain from seeking revenge, warning that any escalation could lead to a breakdown of law and order. He assured residents that the suspect is in police custody and will face legal trial without delay.
He further charged security agencies to expedite their investigations to ensure swift prosecution. He also encouraged the public to continue with their daily activities without fear of violence.
The chairman was accompanied by top officials, including the Vice Chairman, Princess Nse Owoebiak, Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. Mrs. Sarah Efretuei, Chief of Staff, Ulap Victor Joe, security agencies, and youth representatives.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring that justice is served.
