Sanwo-Olu Unveils Lagos Transport Policies, Seeks Stakeholders’ collaboration

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has said his administration is committed to implementing rigorous safety protocols to protect commuters by leveraging cutting-edge technologies, to enhance traffic management and service delivery in the State.

The Governor stated this today while speaking through the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat at the unveiling of the Lagos State Transport Policy, held at Sheraton, Ikeja.

Sanwo-Olu stated that by unveiling the Lagos State Transport Policy, the state government is laying down a comprehensive framework that will guide the continued development and regulation of the state’s transportation sector.

He added that the policy encompasses the integrated Multi-Modal Transport System that ensures seamless connectivity between road, rail, and water transport modes and encourages sustainable practices by promoting environmentally friendly transportation options to reduce carbon footprint.

To make the policy more comprehensive, the Governor announced the planned commissioning of 15 new boats that will take place tomorrow, May 29, 2024, marking a revolution in water Transportation. “Tomorrow, as we are marking the first anniversary of my government’s second term in office, an additional 15 new boats, out of 25 would be commissioned at Badore tomorrow”, he said.

According to him, the policy is not just a document but it is a roadmap to a brighter, more effective, efficient, and sustainable future for Lagos. The policy reflects the vision of the state government of Lagos where transportation is no longer a challenge but a seamless experience that enhances the quality of life for all the residents.

He, therefore, called on all stakeholders, government agencies, private sector partners, and the citizens of Lagos to join hands with the state government in implementing this policy, noting that “Together, we can build a transportation system that is the pride of Africa, setting a benchmark for others to follow. Let us continue to work together to drive Lagos towards a future of unparalleled progress and prosperity”.

While highlighting some of the achievements of his administration in the transportation sector, the Governor recounted his pledge to the people of Lagos to revolutionise the transportation system, alleviate traffic congestion, and create a safer, more efficient, and sustainable environment for all. “Today, as we unveil this policy, we are taking a significant step towards fulfilling that promise. The state’s achievements in the transportation sector have been monumental and are worthy of recognition”. he noted.

The Governor averred that the government has enhanced traffic management and enforcement by deploying Traffic Management Solution (TMS) devices alongside Automatic Number Plate Recognition Cameras (ANPR). He noted that the initiative has proven successful with 26,816 violations captured in the first three months of this year alone.

He said since the inception of his administration, the ANPR Camera has recorded 856,680 violations, minimising human intervention in traffic management and substantially curbing traffic violations and accidents. This includes expanding and rehabilitating some of the road network with ongoing efforts to further extend and rehabilitate additional routes, guaranteeing enhanced traffic efficiency, and highlighting the ongoing construction of the Opebi-Ojota Link Bridge.

Speaking further, Sanwo-Olu stated that his government has diligently revitalised water transport infrastructure through strategic investments in modern ferries and upgraded terminals. Both the Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) now offer an efficient and scenic mode of transportation, alleviating congestion on the roads while providing a dependable alternative for both residents and visitors. Also, the LAGFERRY has successfully transported approximately two million passengers across Lagos Inland Waterways.

Earlier in his welcome address, Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi stated that the policy provides a comprehensive framework for the continued development and regulation of the state transportation system, adding that the policy is not just a blueprint, but the government’s commitment to a future where transportation is no longer a barrier but a facilitator of progress and prosperity.

The Commissioner said the Lagos State Transport Policy represents a bold step forward in the government’s collective efforts to transform the way people and goods are moved within the state. He noted that crafted through extensive consultation with stakeholders, experts, and citizens, the policy embodies the government’s commitment to innovation, efficiency, and inclusivity in all aspects of transportation planning and management.

Mr. Osiyemi applauded the Sanwo-Olu/Hamzat administration for the landmark achievement in the state transportation sector. “The initiatives and projects launched over the past few years are a testament to the Governor’s dedication to improving the lives of our citizens,” he concluded.

Oriire Kidnapping: Stop Politicising Amotekun Casualty Figures, Oyelade Tells Opposition

The Oyo State Government has cautioned opposition politicians against politicising the recent kidnapping incident in Oriire Local Government Area, insisting that misleading narratives about the state security outfit, Amotekun Corps, are unhelpful to ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity. The Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, made the appeal in a statement issued on Thursday, saying Governor Seyi Makinde's recent disclosure that about 200 operatives of the Oyo State Security Network Agency (Amotekun Corps) had died since the organisation's establishment six years ago was being deliberately misrepresented. According to Oyelade, some opposition elements had wrongly linked the figure to the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire, thereby creating a false impression that the casualties occurred during the incident. He described the interpretation as "cheap politics," stressing that no Amotekun operative lost his life in connection with the Oriire kidnapping. "For the opposition to turn the statistics on its head is nothing but cheap politics. Amotekun has not lost a single operative in the Oriire kidnapping incident. The only casualty recorded was a personnel who sustained injuries and is currently recuperating," he stated. The commissioner explained that the 200 deaths recorded since the creation of the corps in 2020 resulted from various causes, including illnesses, natural causes and fatalities sustained during security operations. He added that due procedures were followed in all cases, including notification of the families of deceased personnel. Oyelade maintained that the Oyo State Amotekun Corps remains the most funded and best-equipped security outfit in the South-West, noting that it currently operates 181 vehicles and 450 motorcycles, with a workforce of more than 2,500 personnel. He said the corps is the largest Amotekun formation in the region and one of the best remunerated. The commissioner further recalled that Governor Makinde had consistently advocated state policing and the deployment of superior weapons to security agencies since 2021 to enable them effectively confront bandits and kidnappers. According to him, the governor's repeated calls have received little attention despite the growing security challenges across the country. Oyelade urged political actors to approach the security situation from a non-partisan perspective and avoid statements capable of undermining rescue efforts or endangering lives. He also appealed to residents of the state to continue supporting the government and security agencies in their efforts to maintain peace and security across Oyo State.
