Resuscitate Bursary, Scholarships For Oyo Students in Tertiary Institutions- Lawmakers Urges Makinde

The Oyo State house of Assembly has appealed to Oyo state executive council led by the Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde to look into the resuscitation of the Oyo state Scholarship Board so as to enable disbursement of Bursary and scholarship to Oyo state students in Tertiary Institutions.

The Honourable house led by the Speaker of the Oyo state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin made this known in resolution to a motion moved by Honourable representing Saki West state constituency, Hon. Femi Julius Okedoyin and co – moved by Hon. Akeem Mustapha representing Kajola State Constituency.

The motion titled “An Appeal For The Resuscitation Of Bursary and Scholarship Awards To Indigent And Other Student Of Oyo State Origin In Tertiary Institutions” called on the Executive Arm of the Oyo state Government to make Bursary and Scholarship part of the modalities to complete Makinde’s Free Education Policy.

Femi Okedoyin in the motion recalled that Gov. Seyi Makinde provided scholarship funds to Oyo state student in Law Schools adding that the government should set priorities to touching lives by considering other students in the state.

The motion further decried that despite annual budgetary allocation, the Oyo state Scholarship board has not issued Bursary to Oyo students since 2009.

Hon. Kazeem Olayanju while seconding the motion maintained that the present COVID-19 pandemic has affected students and the educational sector entirely.

Olayanju added that providing Bursary and Scholarship funds will assist student in fixing financial challenges after the pandemic.

Minority leader of the house and Honourable representing Atiba state constituency, Hon. Asimiyu Alarape and Hon. Representing Iseyin Itesiwaju State constituency, Hon. Bamidele Adeola in their separate comments on the motion stated that they are once beneficiary of Bursary allocation in the past.

Hon. Adeola who narrated the ordeal of how he couldn’t afford to purchase an handout when he was schooling but eventually got assisted by Bursary intervention added that student need financial assistance from government to cater for Data Subscriptions to access online researches and E – Learning.

Adeola then enjoined the Government to determine beneficiaries of the Bursary through Academic performance and Grade Points (GP) so as to encourage student to improve in their Academic activities.
