As Nigeria steps up preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, the Kingsley Awodi Para Powerlifting Open Championship has emerged as a strong example of private-sector involvement in grassroots sports development and athlete empowerment.
The championship, spearheaded by Kingsley James Awodi, Chief Executive Officer of Afri-Kings Homes and Properties, reflects a growing commitment to creating platforms for athletes—particularly in para sports—to showcase their abilities on a national stage.
Awodi’s initiative, an open para powerlifting trials event, is aimed at identifying and nurturing emerging talents while strengthening Nigeria’s competitiveness ahead of major international competitions.
Scheduled to hold from April 30 to May 4, the championship is expected to provide para athletes with increased visibility, valuable competitive experience, and much-needed support.
The initiative aligns with Awodi’s history of contributions to sports development in Nigeria. He previously played a key role in the “Adopt-A-Pitch” initiative championed by former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, where he funded the re-grassing of a training pitch at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja—an intervention widely praised for enhancing training conditions.
Beyond infrastructure support, Awodi has also invested in athlete welfare through contributions to the Athletes Training Grant Purse, providing financial assistance to help athletes prepare for major competitions. Stakeholders have described the initiative as a timely boost to morale and performance.
With the ongoing championship, Awodi continues to reinforce the importance of inclusive sports development and sustained investment in emerging talent.
