The open-entry nature of the journalism profession in Nigeria has allowed all sorts of individuals—both trained and untrained—to practice, often without adherence to professional ethics and conduct. This has, in some cases, led to a perception of the media landscape as unregulated and lacking in integrity.
However, amidst this landscape, there remain distinguished professionals who uphold the ethical standards of journalism with unwavering commitment. One such individual is Bisi Oladele, immediate past South West bureau editor of the Nation Newspaper and publisher of Newsspeak , a widely circulated online news magazine known for its credibility and depth.
Today, as Pastor Bisi Oladele turns 55, it is fitting to celebrate not just his contributions to journalism but also his exemplary qualities as a leader, mentor, and model for media practitioners. Beyond his professional excellence, he embodies humility, humanity, and a leadership style that inspires those around him.
My journey with Prince Bisi Oladele began in the early 2000s. Our bond strengthened when the Wale Ojo-Lanre-led NUJ (Nigerian Union of Journalists) executive organized a five-day trip to Ghana. That experience gave me the opportunity to get closer to him, and since then, I have never for once regretted knowing him. More than a friend, he has been a mentor, offering valuable guidance and sharing life experiences that have shaped many of us in the media space.
His impeccable dressing, composed demeanor, and professional conduct consistently set him apart as a distinguished media practitioner. It is no surprise that he is well-recognized and respected by key figures in the public sector and political sphere.
Unlike many in the industry who wield their influence to intimidate younger colleagues, Pastor Bisi Oladele is the opposite. He uplifts others—whether through words of encouragement, support in securing advertisements, or even financial assistance. Many of us can attest to moments when he sent stories alongside a token of appreciation, always with his characteristic humility, saying, “Ma binu wipe owo yen kere, manage it” (Please don’t be offended that the money is small, manage it). This rare generosity and thoughtfulness set him apart as a true leader.
As he marks his 55th birthday, we celebrate not just a seasoned journalist and publisher but a man of integrity, a mentor, and a shining example of professionalism in Nigerian media. Pastor Bisi Oladele is indeed a beacon of excellence, and we look forward to learning more from him in the years ahead.
Happy Birthday, Sir!
