The Oyo State Labour Veterans Association on Tuesday convened its annual general meeting, featuring a thought-provoking lecture titled “Relevance and Integrity in Labour Politics in Nigeria,” delivered by Professor Kehinde Kester of the University of Ibadan.
The event highlighted the association’s dedication to advancing workers’ rights and promoting their welfare.
Comrade Chief Wheed Olojede, Chairman of the Planning Committee for the 2024 Annual General Meeting In his opening remarks, Olojede emphasized the significance of maintaining relevance and integrity in labor politics while addressing the challenges faced by workers and the government alike.
The guest lecturer, Professor Kester in his paper harped on the importance of integrity, transparency, and accountability among labor leaders.
He urged the the labour leaders to consider how these values are essential for navigating Nigeria’s dynamic labor landscape. The presentation spurred vibrant discussions, with participants exploring ways to apply the ideas presented in their respective roles.
As part of the event, the association honored individuals who have made outstanding contributions to labor advocacy and community development with merit awards. Among the awardees were:
Dr. Sola Akande, Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHA), for exemplary service.
Professor Kehinde Kester, for his scholarly contributions to labor relations.
Baba Olu Abiala, the association’s legal adviser, for his unwavering commitment to advocacy.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Comrade Ibrahim Bolomope, a former leader of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), alongside other labor representatives and dignitaries.
In his closing remarks, Olojede called for continued collaboration among stakeholders and urged members to remain steadfast in promoting the interests of workers. The meeting concluded with prayers for a successful year ahead and a renewed commitment to community service.
