The Senator representing Oyo Central Senatorial District, Senator Yunus Akintunde, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Oyo State Governor, Dr. Omololu Olunloyo, describing him as “probably the last of the titans of his generation.”

In a statement issued through his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Kunle Olatunji, Senator Akintunde said Nigeria has lost a rare gem whose life symbolized brilliance, discipline, and exemplary leadership.

“The news of Dr. Omololu Olunloyo’s transition was received with mixed feelings—gratitude to God for a fulfilled life well spent in service to humanity, and grief that he departed just days before his 90th birthday celebration,” Akintunde stated.

He described the late Olunloyo as an embodiment of unusual intelligence, whose early participation in governance—as commissioner and later governor of Oyo State—left an indelible mark on the state’s political history.

“His brief time as governor was remarkably impactful and has since remained a reference point in Oyo State’s development narrative,” the senator added.

Akintunde highlighted Dr. Olunloyo’s dual excellence in academics and public service, noting that his intellectual legacy inspired many others to engage in public life.

“His integrity, honesty, and unwavering dedication to intellectual pursuits set him apart. He was in the league of great post-independence leaders like Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Bola Ige, Lateef Jakande, and others,” he said.

While commiserating with the Olunloyo family and the people of Oyo State, Senator Akintunde prayed for the repose of the elder statesman’s soul and strength for those he left behind.
