The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Oyo State chapter, on Thursday held its first leadership training workshop for union executives across the state, commending the Chairman of the Oyo State Local Government Service Commission (LGSC), Bashorun Akinwole Akinwale Solomon (Wolekanle), for his support for the union and local government workers.
The training, sponsored by the LGSC, was held at the Local Government Staff Training School, Local Government House, Secretariat, Ibadan, with the theme, “The Making of an Effective Union Leader in the 21st Century.” It aimed to strengthen the leadership capacity of union chairmen, secretaries and treasurers for effective union administration, industrial harmony and improved service delivery.
Speaking at the opening of the workshop, NULGE State President, Comrade Ayobami Olusegun Adeogun, described the training as an important initiative to equip union leaders with the knowledge and skills required for effective leadership. He expressed appreciation to the LGSC chairman for his support, noting that the union had enjoyed fruitful consultations with the commission under his leadership.
Adeogun said the relationship between NULGE and the commission had been characterised by consultation and consolidation rather than unnecessary confrontation, adding that the approach had yielded positive results for the welfare and career progression of local government employees in the state. He also commended the commission for sponsoring the capacity-building programme, describing it as an investment in effective leadership and improved grassroots administration.
In his remarks, Bashorun Akinwole commended the NULGE leadership for its commitment to the advancement of local government administration, describing the relationship between the commission and the union as mutually beneficial. He acknowledged the improvements recorded in the performance and functionality of local government workers under the current union leadership.
“We are not asking for too much from the workforce, but efficiency and dedication to duty. Under this present NULGE leadership, we have seen a lot of improvement and positive changes in the functionality of council workers. We still believe you can do better,” he said.
The LGSC chairman assured the union of the commission’s continued partnership in promoting staff efficiency, dedication to duty and optimal performance across local government councils in Oyo State. He stressed the importance of sustained collaboration between management and labour in achieving effective service delivery at the grassroots level.
As a mark of appreciation for his contributions and support, NULGE presented a large portrait to Bashorun Akinwole. Members of his entourage included the Permanent Secretary of the LGSC, Pastor Adeola Omoyeni Oduola; the Head of Local Government Administration, Mr Adedayo Faith Solaja; and the Deputy Director of Administration and General Services, Alhaji Olalekan Jelili Alade.
