NUJ to Protest Alleged Spate of Impunity Against Members August 30

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has declared August 30, a national day of protest tagged impunity against the Nigerian journalists.

The NUJ National Secretary, Shuaibu Usman Leman, in a statement directed all the states and FCT Councils of the Union to mobilise members for the protest.

Mr. Leman directed the Councils to stage protests within their respective press centres.

He said the protest could also be organized in selected media organizations, urging the State Councils to also ensure full media coverage of the event.

The Secretary urged the Councils to intimate the state governments of the planned protest, pointing out that the Union’s National Secretariat had sent a letter to the Presidency regarding the plan.

In the meantime, Oyo State Council of the Union under the leadership of Comrade Adewumi Faniran will hold an emergency Congress on Thursday August 30, 2018 at 10 o clock in the morning.

The Congress, according to Comrade Faniran in a statement signed by the State NUJ Secretary, Comrade Bola Ogunlayi, would serve as a platform to impress the need for concerned authorities to alive to their responsibilities to media Professionals and give Journalists unhindered freedom to practice their profession in the Society.

The statement indicates that immediately after the Congress, there will be protest tagged, “impunity against Nigerian Journalists” in designated places in Ibadan metropolis.

The statement directs all NUJ Chapel leaders and Associations of the Union to mobilise members to the Congress and participate actively in the Protest.

The State Council solicited the coverage of the Protest by all the chapels and other media houses in Ibadan.
