The National Secretariat of Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) has suspended the purported triennial delegate congress of Sports Writers’ Association of Nigeria(SWAN) scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt on Oct. 7.

This is contained in a letter signed by the National Secretary, Shuaibu Usman  Leman and made available to newsmen on Tuesday.

The NUJ also suspended the planned congress by a parallel body scheduled to take place in Abuja, inviting both parties to its secretariat for a way forward.

The letter dated Sept. 24 and forwarded to Mr Honour Sirawo, the SWAN National Chairman was also copied to both the Port Harcourt and Abuja SWAN Credential Committee(SWANECO).

The union, which is the umbrella body, said the suspension was indefinite until contentious issues in the petition forwarded to it are amicably resolved.

“The NUJ National President has directed that you should suspend this election forthwith and indefinitely pending when all contentious issues raised in petitions to NUJ National Secretariat are resolved amicably.

“The president has also directed that a parallel SWAN Congress called for Abuja on 7th October be also suspended.

“We are by this letter also inviting you to the NUJ National Secretariat for a meeting as soon as possible to discuss the way forward,” the letter reads.

It would be recalled that SWAN had recently been enmeshed in crisis over several contentious issues raised by members and state chapters.
