The 27-year-old who had been training at a gym in Anne Arundel County with ambitions of turning professional by year-end, had shown remarkable progress, winning the national Golden Gloves Championship in just three years, according to his gym owner Christen Jeter, who described the loss as devastating.
Nicholas Francis Xavier Giroux, 36, has been charged with first- and second-degree murder in connection with Olugbemi’s death.
Police believe the attack was targeted rather than random, citing surveillance footage showing Giroux approaching Olugbemi with a handgun, firing multiple shots, and fleeing the scene on foot.
Giroux, reportedly a neighbour of Olugbemi, had allegedly threatened him with a gun on previous occasions this year, as noted by Olugbemi’s brother Abraham, although no charges were filed in those incidents according to Maryland court records.
Despite the tragic outcome, Olugbemi had recently achieved significant victories in his career, including winning another amateur fight after his National Golden Gloves triumph in Washington D.C. in May.
Described as a mentor and leader at his gym, Olugbemi was known for inspiring younger athletes and had a close circle of friends who admired his dedication and achievements.
Police are urging local residents with private surveillance or doorbell cameras to share any footage that might aid in their investigation into this tragic incident
