Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships (RISP) at the University of Ibadan, Professor Olanike Adeyemo has called on the federal government to commit more funds to research and Innovation to solve problems confronting the nation.

According to her, Nigeria has been very complacent about solving her problems.

Professor Adeyemo stated that Nigeria would have invested more money in research and development if she is bedeviled by natural disasters.

The Deputy Vice chancellor stated that at the 78th interdisciplinary discourse of the postgraduate college delivered by Professor Adesoji Adesina from the United States of America.

While noting that foreign funders dictate researches they want to fund to Nigerian researchers, Professor Adeyemo noted that Nigeria government and private companies must fund researches that align with our national problems.

While tasking Nigerian researchers to continue to attract funding through their researches and solve problems, the DVC lamented that there are some professors who are civil servant professors in Nigerian universities.

“We are too complacent because we do not have natural disaster. International funding organizations fund researches that are relevant to them. I am sorry to say this but we have civil servant professors who just receive monthly salaries without having any grants to their name. We must step up our game and contribute to solving problems facing our country”

The lecturer, Professor Adesina had said the Nigerian business sector must fund research and development and called on the government to formulate policy that will make this a reality.

Professor Adesina said Nigerian universities must adopt entrepreneurial model to develop new products, access new markets and using new technologies.
