Oyedeji Ahmed Olaide popularly known as Lautech-mouthpiece ( LMP ) is a 500 level students of  agronomy department at Ladoke Akintola University, in this interview with our reporter, he spoke about the ongoing industrial action and  the implication on the part of the students .Excerpts

Can you  tell us what led to the closure of lautech for seven months

It is poor funding

Of what implication has the closure been on the part of the Institution, students and the community at large.

It is unarguable that the closure of the institution for over seven months has  paralyzed and affected a lot of activities within the school and beyond. Apart from the fact that staff are starving on hunger, students academic and future have also been tampered with. The disruption in academic programs serve as non motivational factor to the students. It discourages us from learning. It is not surprising therefore that during this strike, most students are seen involved in diverse activities such as cyber scam, pool betting, unnecessary gossips, watching of films, and reading comic materials for entertainment purposes rather than reading their books. And in the long run, they gradually forget about academics.
Sincerely, the frustration and disappointment is becoming unbearable. In Fact, some students are already thinking of committing suicide since they cant bear it any longer.

The proprietors of the Institution await the report of a panel set up  before further steps can be taken on the reopening of the school what are your expectations from the panel

Well, since the governors have long abdicated from their responsibilities, one may not boldly say that they are ready to make alive their responsibilities. They’ve been putting  the blame on recession. Moreover, no one would frontally oppose the notion that the country itself is presently in recession. So, if the two owners states could Find it difficult to pay salaries even before recession, then what is the probability that the two governors will be able to pay now.It is logically reasonable to expect increment of school fees in the visitation panel report since the present administration under the leadership of professor Gbadegeshin, has been having difficulties to run the Universities. So, you cant over rule that from happening except the two governors are no longer bystander. So many things have been compromised such as inadequate teaching staff, inadequate teaching facilities, and other consumables.

In case it is recommended that there will be Increase in tuition fees will the student be ready to comply

Though, we cant be unmindful of the fact that LAUTECH tuition fees is one of the cheapest amongst state Universities. But at the same time, the University can not be sustained on Meagre IGR, and since LAUTECH is a public school,  it has to be properly funded by the owner States. One of the major responsibility of Governments is to provide education to masses at little or no cost, even with the present tuition fee rate, most students were unable to pay mainly because of non payment of salaries of their parents at various working places in both Oyo and Osun States. Apart from tuition fees, cost feeding, Housing, Transportation, clothing, Stationary etc are on the increase which is ordinarily making it difficult for wards or masses to access education at tertiary levels. During Awolowo Era, All these were free including tuition fees and additional money as stipends from Governments. State Universities were established in order to make University education accessible to indigenes but this objective is been gradually eroded in LAUTECH, if tuition is increased in LAUTECH most students will be out of school and will result in attendance increase in crime rates within the society.

It is very sad that there is no scholarship or tuition fees waiver for brilliant students that find it extremely difficult to even purchase form not to talk of affording other expenses, we have in record on LAUTECH that indigent students are performing excellently well even with the little opportunity given to Education, son of an ordinary local carpenter in a remote area of the state have bagged award as World best Computer Engineer and many other international awards, there are others, In Fact, uncountable that are doing excellently well, so are we saying education is meant for the rich that are less than 5% of the total population ? Don’t forget too, that a student from this noble institution with a low background designed a flying drown being the first in the country.

The indisputable fact is that, students will always kick against any increment of school fees.

Finally a group is planing mother of rally for 9th of january  will that solve the problem.

The fact still remains that we need governments to be more responsive and committed to their responsibilities. At the same time, we need people from within and diaspora to come to our rescue. So, the protest is aimed to make our grievances known so that our plight will be given a serious attention and with immediate intervention. Our plan is to make every protest a peaceful one. So, it doesn’t matter if it has to be on JANUARY 9. What is so important is to have a proper plan and a massive turn out.
