In response to allegations of irregularities, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with its process filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja has affirmed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election in Ondo State, in which Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa was elected as the party’s gubernatorial candidate, substantially complied with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Aiyedatiwa clinched the nomination with a resounding victory, amassing a total of 48,569 votes in the primaries. His closest contender, Mayowa Akinfolarin, trailed behind with 15,343 votes, while Chief Olusola Oke secured the third position with 14,865 votes.

Some of the aspirants who contested against Aiyedatiwa rejected the results claiming the election was not marred with irregularity and manipulation in favour of the Governor.

Reacting to the affirmations by INEC, Barrister Kayode Ajulo said this announcement serves as a vindication for Ondo State Attorney General and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, OON, who had previously stated that the direct primary was conducted in strict adherence to the Constitution, the Electoral Act, and the APC’s own constitution.

Dr. Ajulo  urged the general public to continue to have trust in the judicial process, as the INEC’s affirmation reinforces the legitimacy of the APC’s candidate selection in Ondo State.

This development underscores the commitment of INEC and the relevant stakeholders to upholding the integrity of the electoral process, even in the face of allegations and challenges. It is a testament to the strengthening of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and the safeguarding of the people’s will.
