The Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan has issued a formal statement denying allegations that St. Mary Catholic Cathedral, Oke-Padre, violated environmental laws following reports of its closure by the Oyo State Government.
The Church acknowledged a minor drainage leakage at the toilet facility of St. Mary Model School, located within the Cathedral premises, but firmly stated that this incident does not constitute a breach of any environmental regulation.
In a statement signed by Rev. Fr. Julius A. Akinyode, Cathedral Administrator, the Church clarified that no official complaints or communications were received from residents, the Ministry of Environment, or any government agency prior to the sealing of the school facility and the Cathedral’s gate.
“If there was any significant foul odour, it would have been reported by the active and involved members of the community Landlord Association,” the statement read, highlighting the Church’s strong community ties and transparency.
The Church expressed gratitude for the swift intervention of the Oyo State Commissioner for Environment, Barrister Seun Ashamu, and the Chief Whip of the Oyo State House of Assembly, who helped de-escalate the situation.
Emphasizing its commitment to peace and lawfulness, the Archdiocese urged all government agencies to act only on valid, properly documented complaints. It warned against attempts by individuals or groups to manipulate state institutions for personal or political gain.
The Church concluded by reaffirming its status as a law-abiding and peace-loving institution dedicated to justice and transparency in Ibadan
