The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State has challenged President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to explain the funding of luxury Toyota Prado sports utility vehicles reportedly distributed to selected party youth leaders.
The party said the reported distribution raised questions about accountability and political spending at a time when Nigerians were grappling with economic hardship.
In a statement issued on Monday, October 26, 2026, the Oyo ADC questioned the apparent contradiction between the President’s reported position blaming the opposition for the country’s hardship and the APC’s reported distribution of luxury vehicles for political mobilisation.
The statement, signed by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Chief Rotimi Johnson, said Nigerians deserved explanations about the consequences of government policies and concrete measures to ease their economic difficulties.
It noted that while many families struggled to meet basic needs, patients postponed medical treatment and small businesses battled rising operating costs, the APC National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, reportedly announced the presentation of new Toyota Prado SUVs to selected youth leaders.
According to the ADC, seven vehicles were visible in a video accompanying the announcement.
The party questioned the message such a development sent to young Nigerians whose major concerns, it said, included unemployment, affordable education and economic survival.
“The question is direct: WHO PAID FOR THE PRADOS?” the statement asked.
The ADC demanded clarification on whether the vehicles were purchased with personal funds, party resources or donations, while also calling for disclosure of their actual cost, ownership and beneficiaries.
It further sought clarification on the role of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu in the arrangement, following what it described as Israel’s expression of appreciation to her.
The party urged the APC to make public the funding source, purchase records and list of beneficiaries, arguing that Nigerians should not be left to piece together information from social media posts.
However, the ADC acknowledged that the absence of disclosure did not establish that public funds had been used to purchase the vehicles.
“The undisclosed funding source does not establish that public money was used. It does establish the need for answers,” the statement said.
The opposition party also called on President Tinubu to address the economic difficulties confronting Nigerians and accept scrutiny of his administration’s performance.
It maintained that citizens had the right to demand accountability over political spending and the financing of party activities.
The ADC stressed that Nigerians deserved economic relief, responsible leadership and transparency in political financing.
It concluded by reiterating its demand for the APC to explain the source of funding for the luxury vehicles.
