The Federal Government has shut down over 13 million social media accounts across platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) for violating Nigeria’s Code of Practice on online safety.
According to the 2024 Code of Practice Compliance Report submitted by major platforms including Google, Microsoft, and TikTok, a total of 58,909,112 harmful posts were taken down for offensive or harmful content.
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), issued the Code of Practice to ensure compliance with Nigerian laws, including content regulation and tax obligations.
Director of Corporate Communications at NITDA, Hadiza Umar, said the government also received 754,629 complaints on offensive content, with 420,439 pieces removed following user appeals.
Umar commended the compliance efforts of the platforms, describing the achievement as a demonstration of their commitment to creating a safer online space. She noted that the government will continue working with platforms, civil society, and regulatory bodies to enhance digital literacy, transparency, and user safety in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
