Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Olumide Egbedun, has called on the Inspector General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, to launch a thorough investigation into an alleged threat to his life and the safety of members of his party.
Egbedun made the call while reacting to a disturbing incident in Okuku involving the Executive Chairman of Odo Otin Local Government, Hon. Adewale Adeyinka, who was reportedly pursued by a three-vehicle convoy allegedly linked to Francis Eniade.
The Speaker said he received a distress call from the council chairman while returning from the Osun State House of Assembly after a World Press Conference. According to him, he immediately advised Adeyinka to return to the Okuku Divisional Police Station for safety.
Egbedun said he subsequently proceeded to Okuku with his convoy and security personnel, where he found the chairman already inside the police station.
He explained that it was only upon entering the station that he learnt that two men had reportedly been apprehended by members of the public and that a firearm had allegedly been recovered from them.
Concerned that the situation could degenerate into mob action, the Speaker said he directed his Chief Detail to remove the suspects from the crowd and place them in official custody.
He added that the suspects, together with the firearm reportedly recovered from them, were later taken to Osogbo and handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for investigation.
Egbedun called for an impartial investigation into the incident, including the identities of the suspects, the circumstances surrounding the alleged recovery of the firearm and ammunition, the ownership and purpose of the vehicles reportedly involved in the pursuit, and the events that led to the confrontation.
He also dismissed what he described as false and misleading narratives being circulated on social media by some APC supporters in Odo Otin, accusing political actors of attempting to distort the facts surrounding the incident.
The Speaker further urged the Inspector General of Police to investigate a viral threat video allegedly directed at him and other members of his party.
“Political differences must never become a justification for violence, intimidation, threats or attempts to endanger human lives,” Egbedun said.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the protection of lives, the rule of law and democratic values, stressing that political disagreements in Osun State should be resolved through dialogue, lawful democratic participation and the ballot box rather than violence or intimidation.
“I will not be intimidated by threats, intimidation or acts of violence. I will continue to stand for peace, justice and the democratic rights of our people,” the Speaker said.
