Ekiti SDGs Set To Celebrate International Youth Day

In line with the UN General Assembly in 1999 endorsing August 12 as the Day to celebrate and mainstream young peoples’ voices, actions and initiatives, as well as their meaningful, universal and equitable engagement, Ekiti State is set to celebrate 2020 International Youth Day.

According to the Special Adviser to Ekiti State Governor on Development Partnership/SDGs, Mrs Magaret Fagboyo, she noted that Ekiti State SDGs Office in collaboration with Ekiti State Ministry of Youth & Sports Development will be joining the Global World in commemorating and celebrating the 2020 International Youth Day themed

Also the Senior Special Assistant to Ekiti State Governor on SDGs, Mrs. Abimbola Solanke, noted that Ekiti State SDGs under the administration of Dr. John Kayode Fayemi with the support of Her Excellency Erelu Bisi Fayemi and the Chief of Staff / Chairman (SDGs), Hon. Biodun Omoleye had ensured that Ekiti State was part of the 21 States in Nigeria that celebrated and participated in the UN 2019 International Youth Day, facilitated by Nigerian Youths Network in SDGs. She equally acknowledged their support and contributions for the actualisation of 2020 International Youth Day Celebration

However, considering the impact of COVID-19 Pandemic and directive from the UN to adopt virtual programs and events in celebrating this year international youth day program, the events will be held virtually and broadcast on all EKSDGs social media platforms.

Ekiti State SDGs has started this year celebration of International Youth Day Program with a 17 Days Social Media Virtual Engagement by showcasing and profiling the social impact activities of Ekiti Youths in SDGs, this has helped in creating awareness and sensitization on how young people can take ownership of the SDGs.

Monday August 10 2020, a Mentorship and Development Program was held for Ekiti SDGs Advocate at Old Excos Chamber, Governors Office Ado Ekiti. The Mentorship Development Programe attracted facilitators such as the Special Adviser To Ekiti State Governor on Development Partnership, Mrs Magret Fagboyo, The Senior Special Assistant To The Governor on SDGs, and Rev Tope Popoola, a Social Impact Coach. Each of the speakers addressed varying issues on youth engagement for the implementation of the SDGs, Partnership building strategies with international donors and strategies for social change and transformation.

On Wednesday 12th August 2020 a youth stakeholder’s engagement forum and SDGs Virtual Conference will be held, a platform where youth leaders will be engaged with UN Sustainable Development Goals, activities of Ekiti State SDGs Office in Youth Development and how they could take ownership of the Goals.

The speakers for the Year 2020 International Youth Day have been selected from the circles of Global Social Impact makers whose presentations during this year 2020 International Youth Day Program will help in inspiring Ekiti Youths to take global actions in the domestication, implementation and localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) in Ekiti State.
Some of The Invited Speakers for Ekiti 2020 International Youth Day are: Her Excellency Erelu Bisi Fayemi, First Lady of Ekiti State; Princess Adejoke Orelope Adefulire, The Senior Special Assistant to The President on SDGs; Veronica Obiuwevbi, Country Coordinator, United Nations Volunteer Program Nigeria; Femi Oyeniyi, Country Manager Nigeria, Country Director Sustainable Development Solution Network; Femi Alade, Project Coordinator, Nigeria Youths in SDGs Network.
