The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has explained its decision to place a Post No Debit (PND) restriction on the Osun State Government account, saying the action was taken to prevent the alleged diversion of public funds.
The anti-graft agency, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said it had been investigating the Osun State Government since March 2026 over alleged fraudulent handling of Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds and Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations amounting to about ₦11 billion.
According to the EFCC, some state officials, including the Accountant General of Osun State, had appeared before its investigators for questioning as part of the ongoing probe.
The Commission said the investigation alone did not necessitate freezing the state’s account, but alleged that its decision was triggered by “huge transfers of funds into different suspicious accounts” from August 2, 2026.
The EFCC said it moved swiftly to halt the transactions after observing what it described as attempts to move substantial public funds to corporate entities.
“The Commission cannot watch idly while a state government’s account is being pillaged,” it stated, adding that its preventive mandate was designed to safeguard public funds, assets and resources.
The anti-corruption agency acknowledged the forthcoming Osun State governorship election but insisted that electoral considerations would not prevent it from carrying out its statutory responsibilities.
It said the action was not politically motivated, stressing that it was monitoring the finances of other states and would continue to act in the interest of accountability and transparency.
The EFCC urged Nigerians to disregard what it described as false narratives and attempts to discredit its activities, reaffirming that it remained committed to protecting public resources.
