The Very Reverend Samuel Kayode Olawoyin, Bishop of Ibadan North Anglican Diocese, has described journalism as a divinely ordained profession, urging media practitioners within the Church to see their work as a sacred ministry for evangelism and societal development.
Olawoyin made the assertion while hosting members of the Ibadan North Anglican Diocesan Media during a media get-together held on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at the Cathedral Chapter House, Cathedral of St. Peter, Aremo, Ibadan.
Drawing reference from 2 Samuel 1:1–10, the bishop noted that information dissemination has biblical roots, stressing that the media remains a powerful tool for spreading the gospel and advancing church growth. He charged diocesan media practitioners to focus on preaching Jesus Christ and His attributes through responsible and truth-driven reportage.
“I urge you to deploy the media for the propagation of the gospel. Whether the call is natural or supernatural, see your engagement as a ministry,” Olawoyin said.
He further reminded the media that the birth of Jesus Christ and the promise of His second coming were known through information sharing, warning against fake news, blackmail, pride, and the misuse of the profession for material gain. According to him, journalism should promote development and constantly reflect on life after death, where worldly possessions lose value.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Diocesan Communicator and Chairman of the Ibadan North Anglican Diocesan Media, Chief Ayoade Solomon Olugbemiga, expressed gratitude to the Archbishop of Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province and Bishop of Ibadan North Anglican Diocese, His Grace, the Most Reverend Williams Oluwarotimi Aladekugbe, for his support and encouragement toward strengthening the diocesan media.
Chief Olugbemiga appealed for continued support from the Diocese, Archdeaconries, church societies, and individuals to further enhance the operations of the diocesan media, emphasizing that media service should not be seen as a means of personal enrichment but as service in God’s vineyard.
Also speaking, the Diocesan Media Coordinator, Reverend Peter Oluwatayo, commended members of the media team for their dedication, endurance, and sacrifices, urging them to remain steadfast and committed to expanding God’s kingdom wherever they serve.
In a training session titled “Social Media Ethics and Content Strategy,” media practitioner Yinka Adeniran described social media as a man-made but powerful tool that is both fast and dangerous if misused. He cautioned media practitioners against misinformation and fake news, calling on regulatory authorities and law enforcement agencies to address the excesses of untrained individuals operating within the media space.
Participants at the event were drawn from all Archdeaconries within the Ibadan North Anglican Diocese. The get-together was sponsored by the patron and matron of the diocesan media, Very Reverend Samuel Kayode Olawoyin and Dr. (Mrs.) Lola Olawoyin
