Akpabio Swears in Three New Senators as Senate Meets with Security Chiefs

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio swore in three senators on Tuesday, February 13, who had just won by-elections within their respective senatorial districts.

The newly elected senators are Mustapha Musa (All Progressives Congress, APC, Yobe East), Professor Anthony Ani (All Progressives Congress, APC, Ebonyi South), and Prince Pam Mwadkon (Action Democratic Party, ADP, Plateau North). They represent a variety of political parties and districts.

The Clerk to the Senate, Chinedu Akubueze led the new Senators to take their oaths of office and oath of allegiance, on the orders of the Senate President.

They were subsequently led to their respective seats after the swearing-in by Sergeant-At-Arms.

With the swearing-in of the three new senators, the number of lawmakers in the Senate and their political parties are as follows: APC – 59, PDP – 37, LP – 7, NNPP – 2, SDP – 2, APGA 1 and ADP – 1.

Thereafter the Senate went into a meeting with the nation’s security chiefs and some ministers behind closed doors over the spate of insecurity in the country.

The Red Chamber had last week postponed the meeting till today, Tuesday, February 13.

Those in the meeting include Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Magaji Bichi.

Others are the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Finance and Coordinating for the Economy, Dr. Olawale Edun, Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Geidam and Minister of State for Police Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim.
