The was contained in communiqué issued at the end of their meeting Ibadan.
The commuiqué which was read by Otunba Jimi Otunba Jimi Bolusire, Vice Chairman, Carlton Gate landlord and Residents association reads;
In light of the recent event that claimed lives and destroyed properties in Bodija, we have decided to highlight an impending danger with potentially more devastating consequences if not urgently addressed.
Communiqué of the meeting held by the residence association along General Gas to Iyana Church on January 20, 2024:
Within a distance of less than 1 km, we have numerous gas plants and fuel domiciles in very close proximity to schools, churches, and residential communities. This situation poses a ticking time bomb. Specifically, we have a gas tank farm that is less than five meters from Valencia Schools and opposite Mercy Land Fuel Station.
This gas tank farm includes a mechanic village where sparks from welding activities can ignite a devastating explosion.
Following the meeting, we have reached the following decisions:
Residents will require a review of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and the approvals given to the gas plants and fuel stations within our corridor.
We specifically call on the government to address the gas tank farm operated by Gasland in close proximity to Valencia Schools, various churches including Celestial Church of Christ, New Covenant Church, Redeem Church, and St. Louis, as well as numerous residential communities along the corridor.
We urge the government to urgently intervene to avoid a repeat of the tragedy in Bodija that resulted in the loss of lives and properties.
We recently called on the government and relevant agencies to review DPR guidelines and regulatory approvals for the establishment of fuel and gas facilities within residential communities and public places.
Residents agreed to continue reviewing the safety and security landscape along the community corridor to guarantee the safety of lives and properties.
Therefore, it is imperative that the gas tank farm be relocated from our community within the shortest possible time, considering the potential for future explosions.
Olalekan Thani Chairman Kolapo Isola GRA in his remark said “What we experience in Bodija is a childsplay compared to impending danger in this corridor if the government did not take immediate action.”
He added that a letter will be sent to the government and other agencies on Monday for immediate actions against the impending danger.
