Rivers State House of Assembly Backs State of Emergency Declaration
The Rivers State House of Assembly has expressed support for the declaration of a state of emergency in the state by President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
In a statement signed by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, the Assembly attributed the crisis necessitating the emergency rule to Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s alleged disregard for court judgments and orders, which led to a breakdown of governance in the state.
According to the Speaker, the Governor’s actions, described as “despotic and tyrannical,” obstructed the functioning of the House of Assembly. The Assembly emphasized that while the declaration was not what they had hoped for, they accepted it in the interest of the state and the nation.
“We call on all residents to remain calm as the Sole Administrator appointed by the President assumes duty in the best interest of our state and nation,” the statement read. “Rest assured that we would give any kind of support required of the Rivers State House of Assembly to the Sole Administrator in the best interest of our dear state.”
The Assembly urged the people of Rivers State to support the Sole Administrator during the emergency period to ensure stability and governance.
This development marks a significant escalation in the political crisis in Rivers State, with stakeholders and citizens keenly observing the unfolding situation.
