Speaking on the theme, “Dealing Decisively with Insecurity, Banditry and Terrorism Through Community Participation, Awareness and Policing,” the governor said Nigeria’s independence was achieved through the sacrifices and struggles of the nation’s founding fathers.

He urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from the sacrifices of the country’s heroes past and work together to address the challenges confronting the nation, stressing that unity should remain a priority despite the country’s ethnic and religious diversity.

Makinde also called for adherence to the rule of law and democratic principles, saying the independence anniversary provided an opportunity for sober reflection on the progress and challenges of Nigeria and Oyo State.

According to him, his administration, since assuming office in 2019, has recorded progress in education, security, sports, business and infrastructure across the state.

He cited the establishment of the Amotekun Corps and its collaboration with other security agencies as part of efforts to strengthen security, while also highlighting investments in road networks, education facilities, healthcare infrastructure and the Light Up Oyo initiative.

The governor said development had been spread across the five zones of the state—Oke-Ogun I and II, Ogbomoso, Oyo, Ibarapa and Ibadan—while appreciating residents for their cooperation and support.

He congratulated Nigerians and residents of Oyo State on the anniversary and urged them to continue to live together peacefully for the progress and development of the country.

The celebration featured a march past, cultural displays and presentation of prizes. It was attended by the Deputy Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Fadeyi; Chief Judge of the state, Justice Iyabo Yerima; Head of Service, Dr. Adenike Fashina; Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Alhaja Wasilat Adegoke; other commissioners and government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security commanders and other dignitaries.
