The Chairman of the Oyo State Local Government Service Commission (LGSC), Bashorun Akinwale Akinwole, popularly known as Wolekanle, has approved a comprehensive leadership training programme on unionism for State Officers and Branch Executives of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE)

The approval, which followed a request by the State President of NULGE, Ayobami Olusegun Adeogun, was made during the inauguration of newly elected Branch Executives held in Ibadan on Tuesday.

Bashorun Akinwale while speaking at the event said the initiative is aimed at strengthening leadership capacity and enhancing productivity across the local government system.

Adeogun in his reaction said the training would focus on leadership development, strategic thinking, negotiation techniques, labour relations, and conflict resolution.

Stakeholders noted that union executives play roles beyond representation, including serving as negotiators, policy influencers, and defenders of workers’ rights. They stressed that structured leadership training is essential to bridge the gap between intention and effective service delivery.

According to stakeholders, the training will instill core values such as accountability, transparency, teamwork, and effective communication, while also exposing participants to best practices in union administration and contemporary labour issues.

The programme also forms part of activities marking a special combined event, which includes the inauguration of newly elected Branch Executives, the celebration of International Women’s Day, and the crowning of “Omidan NULGE,” an initiative designed to promote women’s participation and empowerment within the union.

Observers believe the initiative will have a positive impact on the local government workforce by fostering unity, improving service delivery, and promoting sustainable development.

The approval has been widely welcomed as a significant step toward repositioning the union for greater effectiveness and relevance, with a call on beneficiaries to take full advantage of the opportunity to enhance their leadership competence
