The recent wave of speculation surrounding the health of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has left many wondering: Who stands to gain from spreading such unverified rumors? At a time when Ibadan should be focusing on growth and unity under the leadership of its new monarch, the distractions caused by false reports only serve to create unnecessary tension.

The Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Wasiu Olatunbosun, has firmly dismissed the rumors, emphasizing that the Olubadan is alive, hale, and hearty. “I spoke with one of the sons who represented the family at the coronation committee, Prince Olaseke Owolabi Olakulehin,” the commissioner stated, putting to rest the unsettling speculations.

Oba Olakulehin was officially installed as the 43rd Olubadan on July 12, 2024, following months of deliberation and anticipation. His ascension to the throne marked a new chapter in Ibadan’s rich history, and many had hoped that his reign would be free from unnecessary controversy. However, the spread of unfounded claims regarding his well-being suggests that not everyone is willing to let Ibadan enjoy a peaceful transition.

In a society where traditional institutions hold significant influence, the health and stability of a monarch can become a subject of intense speculation. But beyond mere curiosity, one must ask: What do the rumor-mongers hope to achieve? Could it be a politically motivated attempt to destabilize the city’s leadership? Historically, Ibadan’s leadership has been built on a unique and structured succession plan, ensuring that the transition from one Olubadan to another follows due process. Any attempt to spread panic about the monarch’s health disrupts this structure and could create unnecessary division among traditional and political stakeholders.
