UI ASUU Awards ₦1.1m Scholarship to 11 Indigent Students

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan Chapter has awarded 11 indigent students scholarship award to the tune of 1.1 million naira to support their education, keep them focused and improve their academic performances.

The eleven students were found most suitable for the 2024/2025 ASUU indigent students scholarship award after rigorous screening and interviews by the selection committee out of the over 100 students who applied to benefit from the scholarship.

A sum of ₦200,000 was awarded to two students on behalf of the National ASUU.

Five students were granted ₦100,000 each by the University of Ìbàdàn Branch of ASUU (ASUU-UI).

A member of the branch, Professor Tajudeen Àkànjí granted ₦50,000 each to four students, the Union, in support of the initiative.

While speaking on the award, Chairman of ASUU, University of Ibadan, Dr Adefemi Afolabi stated that the Union believed that despite the numerous challenges facing the union regarding the delayed payment of salaries and the delay by the federal government in signing new agreement with the Union, it believes that the future of brilliant Nigerian youths should not be truncated on account of inability to fund the bills of their education.

According to Dr Afolabi, “ASUU sees investing in the future of indigent students as a way of inculcating the values of support and empathy in the beneficiaries so that they will give back to the society in the future.”

While presenting some of the awards, the Zonal Coordinator, Ibadan, Professor Abiodun Olaniran represented by Chairman, ASUU LAUTECH, Olujimi Dada maintained that the Union is selfless and not selfish in the pursuit of her members welfare alone.

He advised members of ASUU not to be tired of putting pressure on the government to do the needful to improve their welfare and the conditions of learning across all public universities.

The Presentation of Scholarship Award to selected Students of the University of Ìbàdàn, Ìbàdàn by the Academic Staff Union of Universities took place at the Union’s Secretariat, Olajuwon Olayide Extension, Ajibode.

Among the beneficiaries are: Omotola Bello (Pharmacy), Alan success Opeyemi (Economics), Moshood Opeyemi (Medicine and Surgery), Adegoke Adeseun Oladayo (Medicine and Surgery), Ogunlowo Tayo (Pharmacy), Bello Ayomide (Medicine and Surgery) and Adewumi Mary (Nursing), among others
