The Registrar, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Professor Segun Ajiboye on Wednesday disclosed that the Council in partnership with Teach 4 Nigeria and Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) have trained 1,771 Nigerian teachers on how to use digital technology in classroom delivery.
The 1,771 teachers were selected from across 20 states of the country as a way to update teachers’ delivery skills and adapt to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Professor Ajiboye who spoke with newsmen in Ibadan on wednesday stated that the training which began in November 2020 lasted for two weeks and focussed on how to utilise digital technology to propel classroom delivery.
According to Ajiboye, the federal government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that teachers adapt technology to deliver teaching as the new normal in global knowledge ecosystem.
The TRCN boss who stated that the capacity building became essential to block the digital holes in some Nigerian teachers adding that a teacher must re-learn, and re-tool him or herself to use digital tools to teach in order to remain relevant nationally and internationally.
He disclosed that the Council had in collaboration with ‘Teach 4 Nigeria’ had mobilised 50,000 Nigerian teachers for a global training on similar topics at the outset of COVID-19 pandemic.
“It is becoming increasingly important and inexcusable not to possess digital knowledge to deliver classroom teachings. This is why the federal government is equipping Nigerian Teachers with the skills to catch up with the global trends. We mobilised 1771 Teachers spread across the country in partnership with the critical stakeholders to train them on deploying digital technology to propel teaching. The Training which spanned over two weeks started in November and it focused on teaching in New Normal with emphasis on use of Digital technology to propel classroom delivery. Earlier Teach 4 Nigeria and TRCN mobilised about 50,000 Nigerian teachers for a global training on similar topics by the ‘Teach 4 All, a global body for world teachers. Currently another training solely organised by TRCN on digital Literacy is ongoing in Uyo the Akwa Ibom State capital for 200 selected teachers across the six States of Bayelsa, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom the host State. The training which commenced on Monday December 14th will last 6 days.”
