It’s good to know that LAUTECH palaver is governing council. But does it vindicate the government ? Oh, no, the governments are the one that install them and whatever the success or failure recorded should also be attributed to the governments. The new inaugurated members of the governing council was also constituted just like the OMOLE led administration. So, it makes no difference whether or not that much should be expected from them unless they are ready to learn from OMOLE political mistakes.
It’s unarguable that in the absence of a governing council, a university can not or properly function. So, the need for an effective functioning of the university is as a result of the reconstitution of the new governing council members. Therefore, the hope of resumption should be rekindled as soon as possible.
Section 2A of the principal act as amended provides: “The Council so constituted shall have a tenure of four years from the date of its inauguration provided that where a Council is found to be incompetent and corrupt it shall be dissolved by the Visitor and a new Council shall be immediately constituted for the effective functioning of the University”.
This express provision for immediate constitution of a new Council to replace the dissolved one has important legal implications for the University system. The provision is couched in the legal imperative “shall”. The phrase “shall be immediately constituted” leaves no room for delay.
In view of this, our hope and expectations are high that the new GC chairman will act in accordance and tackle the crises as soon as possible. Probably, meeting with concerned parties and holding a council meeting would be a ride to solution. However, one should not be unmindful of the fact that LAUTECH problem is funding. Once the Government is able to equip the GC financially and with full commitment, then the problem is totally solved.
Are u satisfied with the composition of the governing council
As student, who am I not to be satisfied ? Though, personally to me, it’s an error of the first century for the LAUTECH governing council to hold a brainstorming or open meeting at polytechnic Ibadan when Ogbomoso is there as the permanent site for the institution. One may wonder if polytechnic Ibadan has become the mother of LAUTECH or owing to the fact that a lecturer from this school is the rector of the polytechnic. No matter what could be the excuse, to me, it’s unthinkable and un-commonsensical except there’s fear of safety in Ogbomoso.
So, far, I’ve been able to gather some information about the new governing council chairman and I must sincerely tell you that he’s a man of honor. I’ve also seen people talking about his administrative acumen, dexterity, leadership skills and the technical know-how especially as the former head of service of Nigeria. All these are enough to be optimistic and confident that he will deliver. I know and I believe he will never allow anything to stain his integrity.
More importantly, he’s a pioneer staff. A former chemistry lecturer who’s expected to know every damn thing about the school. In Fact, I can see one of the staff saying that he taught him in OAU and equally the Alumni members in LAUTECH. This, however, tells that the GC chairman is a great man. I just pray and hope we resume soon.
