The rise of sedentary lifestyles in India is posing a significant threat to public health and fertility rates, according to experts. Dr. Deepika Mishra, an IVF specialist at Birla Fertility & IVF in Varanasi, highlights the growing concern as more individuals spend excessive time in desk jobs and in front of screens, affecting not just overall well-being but also reproductive health.
“A sedentary lifestyle can significantly impact fertility in India, affecting both men and women,” Dr. Mishra stated.
“Lack of physical activity contributes to obesity, hormonal imbalances, and other health issues that can hinder reproductive health. In men, it may reduce sperm quality, while women may experience irregular cycles or ovulatory issues. Promoting an active lifestyle through regular exercise and healthy habits is essential for improving fertility.”
Research supports these concerns, showing that inactivity can lead to obesity, a known risk factor for infertility in both men and women. In men, obesity can reduce sperm quality and disrupt testosterone levels, leading to lower sperm counts and decreased motility. For women, a sedentary lifestyle can result in irregular menstrual cycles and ovulatory problems, with conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) further complicating conception.
Dr. Mishra emphasizes that promoting wellness and regular exercise is vital for improving reproductive health, a key focus at her clinic.
