“One of the project’s signifant accomplishments was witnessed in Abuja, where the SOCS group successfully empowered young adults from the University of Abuja to participate effectively in the electoral process. Addressing the challenge of voter misinformation and disinformation created a more inclusive electoral environment, enabling the youth to counter falsehood and actively engage in elections.

“In Kano, the SDSEI project motivated the youth of Bayero University, Kano to embrace their role as active participants in shaping their democracy. By raising awareness and advocating for youth involvement in the electoral process, the SOCS group witnessed an increase in meaningful participation and an empowered generation of young citizens.

“Additionally, the project’s collaboration with the management of the Federal University of Kashere in Gombe State has led to the integration of a curriculum designed to enhance knowledge and critical assessment of information. Through this collaboration, students gained the skills needed to identify and prevent the spread of misinformation, empowering them to make informed decisions and actively participate in shaping their community’s future.

“The project’s advocacy visit to the Association of Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) resulted in essential partnerships that ensure the protection and integrity of a digital space in Nigeria. These collaborations demonstrate a shared commitment to upholding free expression, combating repression and preserving a vibrant online civic space for all Nigerians”

“The SDSEI project’s communication initiatives, including press conferences, skits, and Public Service Announcements (PSAs), effectively raised awareness, and disseminated vital information to millions of Nigerians. The project sparked nationwide conversations on civil rights, responsibilities, and opportunities by harnessing the press’s power and employing creative communication mediums.

“Furthermore, the project’s commitment to countering misinformation during elections was exemplified by recruiting and training fact-checkers. By educating the youth about the dangers of spreading fake news and equipping them with the skills to discern truth from fiction, the project contributed to preserving peace and stability during elections in Nigeria.

“The provision of informative documents such as policy briefs, information sheets, and factsheets empowered citizens with the knowledge needed to actively engage in the democratic process. These resources fostered a culture of transparency, accountability, and informed decision-making, thus enhancing electoral integrity and building trust in Nigeria’s electoral system.

“As the SDSEI project concludes, the SOCS group and Dr. Funmi Akinyele extend their heartfelt gratitude to SCALE Palladium for facilitating the project and to USAID for their generous support and for providing the necessary funds. The success of the project would not have been possible without their invaluable contributions.

“Moving forward, the lessons learned from the SDSEI project will serve as a foundation for continued efforts to protect the digital civic space and strengthen electoral integrity in Nigeria.

“The SOCS group remains steadfast in its dedication to promoting inclusive civic education and empowering citizens for active participation in shaping the nation’s future. As the SDSEI project wraps up, it is our call to action that every Nigerian should take an active role in shaping Nigeria’s democracy. Join us in safeguarding the digital civic space and strengthening electoral integrity. Empower yourself with accurate civic information and actively participate in informed civic engagement. Together, let’s build a more transparent, accountable, and democratic Nigerian society. Join the movement today”, the statement reads
