Engr. Chukwuemeka Woke, the Director General and Chief Executive of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), has emphasized the urgency of reducing gas flaring in Nigeria.
He asserted that the “persistent practice of gas flaring has marred the breathtaking landscape of Nigeria’s abundant natural resources,” serving as a symbol of missed opportunities to harness energy, foster economic growth, and preserve the environment.
Addressing the critical theme, “Gas Flare Reduction: Catalyst for Accelerating Nigeria’s path to Net-Zero Emissions and Sustainable development,” at the third National Extractive Dialogue 2024 (NED2024), Woke acknowledged the far-reaching environmental and health consequences of gas flaring, which deteriorate air quality, public health, and exacerbate the global climate crisis.
However, Woke emphasized that amidst this challenge lies a remarkable opportunity for groundbreaking innovation, meaningful collaboration, and tangible progress. He stated that the decisions and actions taken at forums like NED2024 will shape the future of Nigeria’s environment, economy, and the well-being of its people and communities.
Aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, Woke underscored the transformative potential of curbing gas flaring, positioning it as not just an environmental necessity but a catalyst for broader sustainable development and a key driver towards Nigeria’s net-zero emissions goal.
As the Director General of NOSDRA, Woke emphasized the intricate link between environmental protection and sustainable development, and the agency’s dedication to ensuring that the exploitation of natural resources does not come at the expense of the environment. The reduction of gas flaring is integral to this mission, and Woke called for collective efforts and shared commitment to develop effective strategies and innovative solutions to significantly reduce gas flaring in Nigeria.
Woke encouraged the diverse stakeholders present to engage openly and constructively, challenge assumptions, and explore new ideas, with the goal of not just discussing but acting, implementing, and transforming.
He expressed gratitude to the event’s co-organizers and funders, and urged all participants to work together towards reducing gas flaring and creating a sustainable and prosperous future for Nigeria.
