Revered scholar, teacher and writer, Professor Bankole Omotosho is dead
He died at the age of 80 in South Africa where he had been sick for a while, premium Times report.
His family confirmed his demise in a
released a statement which reads “Our beloved father and husband moved on from this plane on Wednesday 19th late afternoon,” the family wrote in a statement sent to journalists.
Bankole Ajibabi Omotoso was born on the 21st of April, 1943, in Akure, Ondo State.
He lost his father early and lived with his mother and grandparents.
He attended King’s College in Lagos and graduated in 1963 and later proceeded to the University of Ibadan(UI), where he earned his B.Sc certificate in 1968.
Kole Omotoso received his doctoral degree from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1972.
He lectured at various institution including University of Ibadan, University of Ife. He became,professor of English language at the University of the Western Cape, Bellville, South Africa, where he lectured till the year 2000
He portrayed the “Yebo Gogo man” in several TV adverts for Vodacom mobile phones between the mid-1990s and the 2010s.
