The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, held a virtual meeting with prominent civil rights advocates, including Femi Falana (SAN) and Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), representatives of the Take It Back Movement, to discuss the upcoming nationwide protests.
During the constructive dialogue, the IGP emphasized the importance of maintaining public order and safety during the planned demonstrations.
He acknowledged the group’s constitutional right to peaceful assembly and the Police Force’s duty to facilitate such rights within the bounds of the law.
The IGP advised the Take It Back Movement to coordinate with respective State Police Commissioners to ensure the protests proceed in a safe and organized manner. He strongly cautioned against unplanned open processions, citing the potential dangers they pose.
“Organizing and coordinating with the Police and other security agencies are essential steps to mitigate risks, protect the rights of all citizens, and ensure the well-being of all involved,” the IGP said.
The Police Chief reiterated the Force’s dedication to upholding the rights of all citizens and securing public gatherings. He called on stakeholders to work together to foster a peaceful and secure environment during the planned nationwide protests.
